I have my own style of blending text with Gimp, but I'm afraid you can not follow petty pictures, as they can be unreliable.
So I will use words, not screenshots.
When you start out, find an image to your liking that you would like to put text on. If you are starting out in your first attempt, you should probably just take a premade image about 500 by 120-130.
Then place the phrase you wish to say upon the image. Make it a large font, and first-timers should make it white, and put it in the center as well.
Pull up your layers window (ctrl + L) and right click the text layer. Choose "Alpha to Selection", which should be towards the bottom.
Then go back to the image window and drop a shadow (script-fu > shadow > drop shadow). The first 2 blanks should be set to "2", and the last "5". Deselect "allow resizing."
Then drop another shadow, this time the first 2 should be "1", while the last "0". "Allow Resizing" should still be deselected so don't mess with it.
Go back to your layer's window. Merge your 2 shadows. Now duplicate your background and original text and arrange them so they should appear in this order in your layers window:
* Duplicated Text
* Duplicated Background
* Original Text
* Drop Shadow
* Original Background
Set the following selected layer to screen. You can do this from your layers menu. At the moment they are set to normal.
* Duplicated Text
* Duplicated Background <----------
* Original Text
* Drop Shadow
* Original Background
Then set this layer to "multiply".
* Duplicated Text
* Duplicated Background
* Original Text <-----------
* Drop Shadow
* Original Background
Finally, if you wish to make your image a little more cooperative, you can bucket fill the orginal text by selecting "alpha to selection" again. Then you can put any pattern you wish into your text.
